Some state schools snap up .xxx domain names
ANN ARBOR (AP) -- Some universities in Michigan are among schools nationwide snapping up .xxx domain names to avoid links of their names to porn sites.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the University of Michigan took a direct approach and grabbed 21 .xxx website names. School spokesman Rick Fitzgerald says it's a "rational and practical step" to protect its image.
None of the .xxx names will be used by the school.
The newspaper reports Central Michigan University purchased three .xxx domain names. Some other schools are considering the idea.
Some schools including Michigan State University, however, aren't buying the domain names. Instead, Michigan State says it's monitoring the situation and has promised to pursue anyone who improperly uses its trademarks or images.
