Cooley to sponsor free bankruptcy seminars

Due to the economic climate and drop in housing values, bankruptcy filings have increased. Because many debtors filing for bankruptcy cannot afford an attorney, Thomas M. Cooley Law School along with the United States Bankruptcy Court - Eastern District of Michigan and the Federal Bar Association - Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, have begun offering free monthly seminars to help individuals understand and navigate the process of filing for bankruptcy. The seminars will be offered every second Wednesday of the month from January until May. The first session will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11. All seminars take place on the 21st floor of the United States Bankruptcy Court, 211 West Fort Street in Detroit. Topics to be covered include: * Overview of the bankruptcy process. * Differences between Chapter 7 (liquidation) and Chapter 13 (reorganization). * Discharging debts and what isn't dischargeable. * What to expect at the meeting of creditors. * Explanation of forms. * The automatic stay--the Bankruptcy Law's "stop sign."
