Nonprofit launches scholarship in honor of WSU dean

The 313 Project, a nonprofit organization that began as a Wayne State University Law School student coalition, recently debuted the Dean Michele R. Miller Memorial Scholarship for graduating Detroit high school students. The scholarship will provide recipients with a minimum of $1,000 in financial support to pursue higher education and/or career success. Scholarship winner(s) will be selected based on 1) academic excellence, 2) service and commitment to Detroit, and 3) passion for public interest and/or social justice. Applications must be received by Friday, June 29, and finalists will be notified on or before August 1. The 313 Project encourages students of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and citizenships to apply. The scholarship is named in honor of Michele R. Miller (1952--2011), a light and inspiration to thousands of students and colleagues, according to scholarship founders. Miller was a graduate of Central High School in Detroit. She taught in Highland Park elementary schools before she continued her education at Wayne State University Law School. Miller later returned to serve as an assistant dean in the Law School for almost 25 years -- the last 10 as dean of students. The Dean Michele R. Miller Memorial Scholarship honors Miller's lifelong commitment to learning, mentorship, and education. The 313 Project was founded in 2009 as a student coalition at Wayne State University Law School, uniting members of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA), Black Law Students Association (BLSA), and Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA.) After two years of facilitating service and charitable endeavors in Detroit, including holiday toy and clothing drives and collaborations with local grassroots organizations, The 313 Project became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2011.
