International arbitration authority to speak at Wayne Law Commencement, May 14
Gary Born, chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group of international law firm WilmerHale, will speak at Wayne State University Law School's 2012 Commencement Ceremony at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 14, at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit. Born will also receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from Wayne State University.
"I am pleased to welcome Gary Born to this year's Commencement Ceremony," said Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman. "He is a renowned legal expert whose academic work has had a tremendous influence on the field of international dispute resolution."
Born heads WilmerHale's 70-person international arbitration group, which is based in London and integrated with related practices in New York, Washington, Berlin and Brussels. He has represented companies from Europe, the U.S., Asia and other countries in arbitrations under all leading institutional rules (ICC, LCIA, AAA, Vienna, Stockholm, ICSID) and in ad hoc arbitrations in all leading international seats (London, Paris, Geneva/Zurich, Vienna, Stockholm, New York, Washington, Singapore).
Born also advises on the litigation of international disputes in U.S. courts. He has specialized experience in the fields of jurisdiction, enforcement of judgments, conflict of laws and international judicial cooperation, and also serves as an expert witness on aspects of U.S. private international law in foreign proceedings.
Born has taught law at Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, University of St. Gallen, Georgetown University Law Center, National University of Singapore, University of Virginia School of Law, University College London and University of Arizona College of Law. He is a member of the American Law Institute (ALI) and has served on the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law, on the Advisory Committee of the ALI's Restatement of U.S. International Arbitration Law, and as co-chair of the American Bar Association International Section, Committee on International Aspects of Litigation.
