Free child ID's offered for Missing Children's Day

Oakland County Commissioner Janet Jackson joined by Commissioners Nancy Quarles and Helaine Zack will host a special free Child ID Day Event on Saturday, May 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Southfield Civic Center Parks and Recreation Building located at 26000 Evergreen Road in Southfield. At this event, children will be fingerprinted and provided valuable personal safety and internet safety information given to parents and guardians. Commissioners will be giving Child Safety Identification Kits as part of the "Safety Kids! Great Kids! Child Safety Kits & Youth Program" at the annual City of Southfield's Princess and Super Heroes Day event. Admission to the Princess and Super Heroes Day event ranges from $7 to $10 for children and adults. Vendors are sought to participate in the event that attracts more than 300 area youth, between 2-to-12-years of age, along with their parents. In partnership with the national TAKE 25 event which is recognized by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, this year, Commissioner Janet Jackson will be joined by a representative from the Diversity Outreach Coordinator, External Affairs Division of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to help educate families on internet safety, online dangers and real-world consequences. Parents will become informed about useful tools to protect their children from predators and will be encouraged to "Take 25 Minutes" to talk to their children about safety against "stranger danger." To commemorate National Missing Children's Day, former President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25th in 1983 as National Missing Children's Day. May 25th is the designated date that serves as an annual reminder to the nation to renew efforts to reunite missing children with their families, remember those who are still missing, and make child protection a national priority.
