Center provides mediator training opportunities

In a world where conflict is resolved primarily through litigation and violence, mediation is a non-adversarial, affordable and time saving choice. Mediation is a private process where individuals work collaboratively to brainstorm and negotiate solutions that meet everyone's needs. A mediator facilitates communication and promotes voluntary decision making by the parties. Oakland Mediation Center (OMC) is offering State Court Administrative Office Approved 40-Hour Civil Mediator Training to those looking at entering the mediation field, as well as Advanced Mediator Training opportunities for practicing mediators to enhance their skill set and meet the circuit court roster requirements of advanced mediation training. The "40-Hour Civil Mediator Training" will take place on Fridays, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30, & Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Attendance at all sessions is required in order to receive a certificate of completion. Camelia Ureche will teach participants the skills necessary to act as mediators in facilitating the resolution of general civil disputes. This training is the first step for any individual who wishes to mediate privately or qualify for the circuit court roster approved list of mediators. The cost of the training is $1,095 and includes continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, course materials, and a certificate of completion. This training is eligible for the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) funding and is listed on the Career Education Consumer Report (CECR) website at www.mycareereducation.org. "Tools for Managing Conflict: What You Don't Know May Hurt You!" is a 4-Hour Advanced Mediator Training on Thursday, Nov. 15, with JoAnna DeCamp. At this workshop mediators will learn why conflict happens and some useful strategies for managing disagreements while helping parties avoid being disagreeable. This interactive workshop will explore conflict and communication styles that contribute to ongoing misunderstandings. Trainees will then explore practical skills that mediators can use to diffuse the level of emotion, acknowledge hurt feelings and take steps toward building lasting agreements. "10 Biggest Roadblocks to a Successful Mediation" is an 8-Hour Advanced Mediator Training on Friday, Dec. 14, with Antoinette Raheem and Earlene Baggett-Hayes. In this interactive training, trainees will focus on strategies for avoiding, and/or overcoming problems that frequently derail mediation, such as the mediator's loss of neutrality, high emotions between the parties, when attorneys present challenges, lack of familiarity with cultural differences, and more. Trainees will participate in role plays to strategize and develop options to address the various obstacles, with the insights of two highly trained and experienced mediators. "OMC's mission is to help the community peacefully resolve conflict through mediation and education," said Bonnie Hanes, OMC executive director. "These trainings teach powerful skills and techniques to resolve conflict and prevent escalation. By resolving conflicts, we are creating a more peaceful community."
