Education, community leadership to highlight the 2013 WLAM Foundation reception, March 20
The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation took a step forward this year, expanding its focus on education and community leadership involvement.
Highlighting this year's reception next month will be remarks by Susie Schechter, executive director for Reading Works, a collaborative initiative dedicated to raising the level of adult literacy in metro Detroit, who will speak on finding your community passion. In addition, Just the Beginning Foundation, an organization dedicated to educational programs aimed at minority and underrepresented students in middle and high school who demonstrate an interest in pursuing careers in the legal field, will be recognized as a Community Honoree.
Attendees may bring a self-help or children's books to donate to Reading Works.
At the Wednesday, March 20, event, the WLAM Foundation will introduce the 2013 Outstanding Women Law Students chosen to receive a total of $30,000 in scholarships to support their education. The awardees were selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership on women's issues, through a competitive process. This year, the awardees will receive a 20% increase in scholarship awards from the Foundation from last year. Now in its 17th year, 195 awardees have received close to $440,000 in financial support of their law school educations. Based on a recent survey of past awardees, nearly 75% of those who responded live and work in Michigan.
The Foundation's many corporate, law firm and individual donors have given generously to support the WLAM Foundation's educational mission, and many will also attend the March 20th event. The Reception offers many reasons to celebrate the community's future lawyers and leaders.
The Reception will take place at the Local Kitchen and Bar in Ferndale, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at a suggested donation of $25 per attendee. Recently opened, the Local is located at 344 W. 9 Mile Road in Ferndale and parking is available behind the restaurant or valet is available. Registration is requested by Wednesday, March 13. To register, contact Barb at (248) 740-7003 to charge by telephone, or charge online at www.wlamfoundation.org.
The WLAM Foundation's website also offers opportunities to support the scholarship fund as a member of the Dean's List, supporters at levels above $125. Virtually all donations go directly to scholarships, and they are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
