Schuette loses bid to remove school board members
DETROIT (AP) -- Seven elected Detroit school board members will keep their positions after a Wayne County Circuit Court judge sided against a challenge by state Attorney General Bill Schuette.
School board attorney George B. Washington said last Thursday that Judge John Gillis issued the ruling last Tuesday.
Schuette filed suit in August to remove seven of the 11 board members, saying they were elected in districts instead of at-large. Under state law only school districts with enrollments above 100,000 students are allowed to elect board members by district.
Detroit Public Schools dropped below that threshold several years ago.
The district has been under state oversight since 2009, with its finances controlled by emergency managers.
