'Wage and Hour Bootcamp' offered as DOL increases audits

Raising the Bar, an educational series raising employer awareness of current issues in employment and labor law and offered by Detroit-based employment law firm Nemeth Burwell PC, returns Wednesday, May 15, with a 2013 Wage and Hour Bootcamp. With the Department of Labor (DOL) working towards its goal of having 90 percent of employers properly classifying their employees by 2016, the Wage and Hour Bootcamp presents an opportunity for employers to revisit requirements for proper worker classification, according to Linda G. Burwell of Nemeth Burwell. "The DOL has hired additional full-time investigators and is conducting more compliance audits to achieve its objectives," said Burwell. "Although the DOL has identified specific target industries with historically higher than average violations, such as construction and home healthcare, it is becoming increasingly evident that all employers should be wondering when, not if, they will be audited and prepare accordingly." Topics to be covered at the Wage and Hour Bootcamp include: * The DOL's five year plan: What to expect. * Compensable time: You want to be paid to do what? * Exempt versus non-exempt status. * Are you my employee? Independent contractors, consultants, temps and leased worker classifications. * Conducting an internal audit. * What to expect when the DOL comes knocking. Raising the Bar will be conducted on Wednesday, May 15, from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the Troy Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy.
