Michigan Supreme Court axes judge for misconduct
LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Supreme Court has ousted a Wayne County judge for forging her lawyer's signature on divorce papers and lying under oath.
The state's top court ruled Wednesday that Judge Deborah Ross Adams deserved more serious penalties than recommended by a state judicial review panel.
In April, the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission proposed the Supreme Court give her a 180-day suspension.
The court unanimously agreed she committed misconduct. Five members voted to remove Ross Adams, while two voted to suspend her for 180 days.
Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Stephen Markman says a judge who lies under oath is "unfit to sit in judgment of others."
Ross Adams lawyer Cyril Hall tells The Detroit News his client is "devastated" by the decision.
