Oakland County commissioners pass three-year budget

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners successfully passed a balanced budget recommended by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Finance Committee for fiscal years 2014, 2015, and 2016 at the Thursday, Sept. 19, Board meeting. The budget was presented by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners' Finance Committee Chairman Thomas F. Middleton on behalf of the committee to the full Board. "I am pleased with today's unanimous 21-to-0 vote in favor of passing the finance committee's amended county executive's budget for 2014, 2015, 2016," stated Middleton. "This action demonstrates the unique ability that Oakland County leaders have in working together which is the key to creating a balanced budget. This bi-partisan effort is a collaboration among the county administration, the Board of Commissioners and all county-wide elected officials and has made the more than $799 million budget for 2014 a reality. The planning that goes into establishing a balanced budget is tremendous. The investment we make to implement the very best budgetary practices makes Oakland County a standout in fiscal management," Middleton added. As part of the budget process, the Board of Commissioners' Finance Committee looked at all areas of the budget. Sharing Commissioner Middleton's sentiment, Oakland County Board of Commissioner's Chairman Michael J. Gingell stated, "I appreciate the work of the commissioners, the finance committee, the county administration and all the county elected officials who through their efforts helped create a balanced budget." Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson applauded the Board of Commissioners for passing the balanced three-year budget. "Moody's and Standard & Poor's reaffirmed our AAA bond rating last month in the face of a Detroit bankruptcy filing because of our strong budgeting practices," Patterson said. "Today's vote by the commissioners shows the county continues to live within its means." Patterson credited cooperation among the countywide elected officials, judiciary, and commissioners for achieving another balanced multi-year budget. "Oakland County continues to be successful because its elected officials and employees focus on how to deliver the best services to our residents within budget," Patterson said.
