Man guilty in girlfriend's strangling, mutilation
PONTIAC (AP) -- A suburban Detroit man has been found guilty of strangling and dismembering his girlfriend.
A jury last Friday convicted 29-year-old William Dhondt of first-degree murder and mutilation of a dead body in the death of 29-year-old Kaitlin Hehir.
Farmington police say Dhondt reported Hehir missing in February 2013 and they arrested Dhont after finding the body parts.
Prosecutors described the crime as deliberate and brutal. Defense lawyer Judith Gracey says Dhondt snapped during a drunken argument and didn't mean to kill Hehir, making voluntary manslaughter a more appropriate charge.
First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole in Michigan.
