Hunger Free Summer campaign underway
DETROIT (AP) - Organizers have launched the annual Hunger Free Summer campaign whose goal is to provide 2 million meals to children in the Detroit area.
This year's effort is being coordinated by Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan and the Charter One Foundation.
According to officials with the campaign, more than 300,000 children in southeastern Michigan rely on free or reduced-fee meals during the school year. When school lets out, those kids risk missing meals.
Hunger Free Summer donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar. Every $1 donation can provide six nutritious meals for hungry children.
The 11-week Hunger Free Summer campaign ends Sept. 1. Donations can be made online and via the mail, telephone and text.
