Former FBI agent addressed Cooley law students

Former FBI agent and author of "Black Banners," Ali Soufan spoke to Cooley Law School's Homeland and National Security Law LL.M.'s Law of Counter-Terrorism class on June 11. Soufan shared important insights on interrogation and use of enhanced techniques with Cooley students during his presentation that took place over "Blackboard Collaborate" with Soufan in New York. "Having guest speakers present in class provides a unique insight to the practice of homeland and national security law," said Michael C.H. McDaniel, professor and director of Homeland Security Law Programs. "We feel fortunate that Ali Soufan has taken the time to discuss these important topics with our students." Soufan was one of the foremost experts in interrogation of terrorists and a vocal opponent of enhanced interrogation techniques. He was involved in a number of high-profile anti-terrorism cases both in the United States and around the world during his time in the FBI before resigning in 2005. Before retiring, Soufan had expressed concern with the CIA for not sharing information that may have prevented attacks. He is now the CEO of the Soufan Group, a company that provides strategic security intelligence services to governments and multinational organizations. The Group provides training programs, security services, and research insights to arm clients with the essential knowledge and skills to prepare for, manage and respond to constantly evolving security needs. Andy Arena, Cooley adjunct professor and former FBI agent in charge of counterterrorism and counterintelligence programs, played an instrumental role in bringing Soufan to Cooley.
