Society to host Q&A on mandatory state bars
Earlier this year, the Michigan Supreme Court convened a task force to address whether or not the state should continue to require licensed attorneys to maintain membership in the State Bar of Michigan. Although most states require bar membership to practice law, mandatory bars continue to be challenged in a number of states, trying to find ways that are less intrusive upon attorneys' First Amendment rights.
The Federalist Society will conduct a question and answer session on "Unalienable Rights: The First Amendment Implications of a State Bar Association." The speaker will be Richard McLellan of McLellan Law Offices and chairman of the Michigan Law Revision Commission. There will also be an introduction given by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren.
The event will take place Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 8 to 9 a.m. at Plunkett Cooney, 38505 Woodward Ave., Ste. 2000 in Bloomfield Hills.
Attendees should register with Meghan Keenan at mkeenan@crcpublicrelations.com or call 703-683-5004, ext. 166.
