Lawyers must stay on Curtis case, says judge
GRAND RAPIDS (AP) - A law firm seeking to drop Chad Curtis as a client must continue to represent the former Major League Baseball player in a lawsuit by girls who accuse him of sexual misconduct.
Grand Rapids federal Magistrate Ellen Carmody says the Warner, Norcross, & Judd firm must stick with Curtis, at least for a while.
The Grand Rapids Press reports Curtis can't afford to pay his lawyers and wants to represent himself. But with depositions scheduled for January, Carmody says changing lawyers wouldn't be fair to other parties.
Curtis is in prison after being convicted of criminal sexual conduct. Girls said he abused them while working as a volunteer at Lakewood High School.
Curtis played Major League baseball from 1992 through 2001. The school district is also being sued.
