TRAVERSE CITY (AP) — A judge sentenced a northern Michigan school bus aide to a year in jail Monday after a video showed him insulting a 13-year-old boy, twisting his arm and pressing his head against a window.
“What you did is one of the worst things I’ve seen in district court,” Judge Thomas Phillips said.
William Rosinski, 44, appeared in court, three weeks after pleading guilty to attempted third-degree child abuse, a misdemeanor. He was a bus aide for Dean Transportation, which transports students in the Traverse City area.
The Sept. 14 video shows Rosinski taunting the teen, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported recently.
“You’re a big baby,” he said before pressing the boy’s head against a bus window with his elbow.
When the boy screamed, Rosinski replied: “Shut your mouth. ... We got kids on the bus.”
Rosinski told the judge that he was frustrated with unruly kids but didn’t intend to hurt the teen. He said he reports problems to school officials but “nothing ever gets done.”
“Unless people have dealt with kids like this for as long as I have — it’s a very, very trying job,” said Rosinski, who apologized.
The judge wasn’t impressed.
“I don’t think you’re helping your case by what you said,” Phillips said.
