Economic, political and regulatory forces, coupled with technological innovation that continues to challenge and change the delivery and payment of health care, will be among the topics addressed by government officials and health law experts at the American Bar Association’s Physicians Legal Issues: Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Virtual Conference.
The impact of COVID-19 will be a focus of the Physicians Legal Issues conference.
The annual ABA Health Law Section event, designed for attorneys and physicians who work in health care and closely aligned industries, is co-sponsored by the Chicago Medical Society and the American College of Legal Medicine. It will be held virtually Sept. 20-24.
Topics to be covered include new payment models, compliance issues, enforcement trends, contracting, tips for managing transactions, cybersecurity, the implications of new technologies and workplace issues for physicians.
Aletha Maybank, chief health equity officer and senior vice president of the American Medical Association, will deliver Monday’s keynote address.
Other conference programs include designing health care delivery for underserved communities and looking at ways to begin building an entryway for more African Americans and other people of color to enter the health care industry. As well, a program will examine promises and challenges of the 21st Century Cures Act, which aims to accelerate medical product development and bring new innovations and advances to patients who need them faster and more efficiently.
The impact of COVID-19 will also be a focus of the conference. One program will examine how remote monitoring via artificial intelligence was used during the pandemic to identify and track the disease. The panel will also evaluate the continuing legal and ethical considerations of AI and its use with patients. Another program will feature a panel of physicians and attorneys from Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia who will discuss their countries’ management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
