The State Appellate Defender Office (SADO) and the Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System (MAACS) will present the “Michigan State Appellate Defender Office Appellate Defender Annual Fall Training” online from October 7-22 via Zoom. This training is for defense attorneys and defense attorney team members only.
MAACS administers the system for appointing criminal appellate counsel in all Michigan circuit courts, from a roster of private attorneys and SADO.
The training schedule will feature:

• Litigating Forensic Science Issues on Appeal, with Imran Syed
• Race, Trauma, and the Fourth Amendment, with Kristin Henning

• Improper Vouching in CSC Cases and Michigan Supreme Court Precedent, with Katherine Marcuz
• Cell phones and Fourth Amendment, with Jason Eggert
• Our Perspective: Voices of Appellate Clients, with Darryl Woods Sr., DeAndre Carter, Kenneth Nixon
• Secondary Trauma Awareness, with Alia Berry
—Day 3: Thursday, October 21
• Preparing for the PSIR Interview, with Anna White
• Using Story Structure in Sentencing Arguments, Keeley Blanchard
• Feedback Loops, with Patrick Barry
• U.S. Supreme Court Update, with David Moran
—Day 4: Friday, October 22
• Michigan Case Law Update, with Adrienne Young

• The Importance of Cultural Competency in Appellate Work – Why it Matters, with Angie Martell
In addition, new MAACS roster attorneys are required to attend Orientation on Wednesday, October 6, and Tuesday, November 9. Anyone unable to attend all sessions should email maacsroster@sado.org. Advanced registration is required.

• Found the Issues. Now What?, with Angeles Meneses
• Challenging the PSIR, with Jessica Zimbelman
• “Help me help you!” - Litigation Support Procedures, with Patty Maceroni
• Questions and Answers, with Brad Hall, Patty Maceroni, Marilena David
Advanced registration is required. Attendees will receive a confirmation email with Zoom connection information immediately after registering. Attendees should save that information and use it to join the program at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. A reminder email will be sent prior to the session.
