Cohen sworn in as newest Circuit Court judge

Judge David M. Cohen was recently sworn in by Chief Judge Jeffery S. Matis as the 79th person to serve as an Oakland County Circuit Court judge. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Cohen to the bench early in February to fill the vacant seat created when Judge Shalina Kumar was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Cohen will preside over Kumar’s civil and criminal dockets and will be located in Courtroom 1C.

Prior to his appointment, Cohen was an administrative law manager for the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules in Detroit, after having been an administrative law judge with that office for ten years.  He provided oversight on hundreds of hearings, ensuring that proceedings were conducted fairly in accord with all applicable statutes and administrative rules.  Prior to that office, he worked in private practice for 12 years where he specialized in personal injury, administrative legal matters, and ADA disability rights litigation.

“My colleagues and I congratulate Judge Cohen on his appointment and we are pleased to welcome him to the bench,” stated Matis. “The breadth of his experience in the legal arena, including his many years as an administrative law judge, has prepared him well for his new role as a member of the judiciary. We look forward to the contributions he will make to the administration of justice in Oakland County.”

Cohen received his Bachelor’s Degree from Wayne State University and his law degree from the Wayne State University Law School.
