Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is one of four attorneys general to take action against illegal robocalls to the next level by partnering with YouMail, a platform that engages traceback technology to assist in determining the source of such calls. The company also offers an app that blocks calls automatically for users.
The Department first leaned on YouMail in 2020 when Nessel, as part of a bipartisan coalition of 52 attorneys general, called on USTelecom to continue its collaboration with state attorneys general by bolstering technological capabilities to improve enforcement against illegal robocallers.
Most recently, YouMail assisted Nessel in action investigating scam robocalls pretending to offer AT&T DirecTV services, with a goal of putting a stop to the illegal robocalls.
“We appreciate this newly forged partnership with YouMail, which will greatly assist our efforts to combat these nuisance and illegal calls,” Nessel said. “Protecting consumers remains one of my top priorities as Michigan Attorney General and YouMail’s traceback technology aides us in that work.”
Other states working with YouMail include North Carolina, Vermont, and Indiana. The company is also working closely with the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission.
“It’s great to see the AGs work so hard on addressing the problem of illegal robocalls, and YouMail is pleased to assist those efforts,” YouMail CEO Alex Quilici said. “Anyone who wants to be a part of the robocall fight now need only download and run the YouMail app, and YouMail will not only block calls to them but illegal calls to them will automatically become part of the body of evidence available to support officials working to shut those calls down. As a society, we all share this problem together, so we all need to be a part of the solution.”
