Fundraiser to benefit Penny Beardslee Public Interest Fund

A fundraiser will be held Saturday, June 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Nemo’s Bar, 1384 Michigan Ave. in Detroit, to benefit the Penny Beardslee Public Interest Fund at Wayne State University Law School.

The fund, established in 2020 after Beardslee’s death, supports paid internships for Wayne Law students at public defender offices in Detroit, including the Federal Community Defender Office and the State Appellate Defender Office, as well as the ACLU of Michigan.

After Beardslee earned her law degree from Wayne Law, she started her legal career at the State Appellate Defenders Office in 1990. In 1995, she left SADO to work at the Federal Defenders Office in Detroit.

Beardslee was a member of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan and served the association for many years. She started as CDAM’s representative to the State Bar of Michigan Criminal Law Section; served on CDAM’s Education Committee as chair and co-chair for too many years to count; was faculty for CDAM’s Evidence Boot Camp and Trial College; served as CDAM’s Skills Training coordinator; and presented at many CDAM conferences. Beardslee was elected to CDAM’s Board of Directors and eventually served as second vice president and first vice president. In 2012, in culmination of all of her hard work, she was elected president.

Suggested donation for the June 4 fundraiser is $50. Question about the fundraiser may be directed to Julie Carroll at juliecarroll97@gmail.com. For those unable to attend the event but who would like to donate to the fund, donations may be made online at the https://giving.wayne.edu/donate/law.
