Wayne County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) has officially transitioned from a court-based program to its very own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
For 25 years, the Wayne County CASA program has been providing a voice for children who have experienced abuse and neglect and are part of the child welfare system. It is proud to continue that same level of advocacy, but now has the opportunity as a nonprofit to grow its program in order to serve more vulnerable children in Wayne County.
There are almost 3,000 children in care in Wayne County. Historically, the CASA program has been able to serve 125 children per year.
As sworn officers of the court, Wayne County CASA specially trained volunteers are responsible for making recommendations for the safety, permanence, and well-being of children who fall under the Third Judicial Circuit Court, Juvenile/Family Division, abuse and neglect docket. Through no fault of their own, many have been removed from their homes—sometimes separated from their siblings—and placed in foster care. CASA volunteers strive to become a positive and stable influence for their assigned children, while ensuring their needs are being met both in and out of court.
