The American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution will host the largest gathering of mediators, arbitrators, ombuds, judges, dispute resolution leaders, attorney advocates and others who want to learn more about ADR at its Annual Dispute Resolution Spring Conference, May 10-13, at Caesars Palace Las Vegas.
Programs will address creative conflict solutions through negotiation, community mediation, conflict management systems and civil discourse, as well as topics that are especially relevant in the western U.S., such as Indigenous Peoples’ rights, water conservation and climate change and small claims arbitration.
• Carrie Menkel-Meadow, Chancellor’s Professor of Law and Political Science at the University of California, will discuss “Where Has the ‘Multi-Courthouse’ Gone? Online and Other Places? With What Consequences?”
• Natalie Armstrong-Motin, founder of Marketing Resolution in Marsing, Idaho, will address “Proven Strategies for Marketing Your ADR Practice in Our World Today”
• Justice Cheryl Demmert Fairbanks, Tlingit & Haida Supreme Court and the Inter-Tribal Court of Appeals of Nevada, will address “The Shift: From Adversarial to Restoration”
Other program highlights:
• “Navigating Change in ADR Technology: Best Practices for Party Empowerment” — Online interactions are now the default for mediation in the United States. Parties now expect to use technology and to play a role in designing their resolution processes. Experts will discuss what this new online version of the field looks like today, as well as what it will look like tomorrow—and how it can help mediators expand their reach and effectiveness.
• “Eligibility and Maintenance of a Court ADR Roster: Train Them, Retain Them, Transition Them” — The panel will explore the systems and strategies used to remotely train and maintain a qualified roster of ADR practitioners. How do programs onboard, train and mentor new mediators? What can be done to monitor, support or upskill neutrals in a changing landscape and build a diverse and highly skilled roster?
