The American Bar Association Antitrust Law Section will host its Global Seminar Series event in Ireland on May 16, with an afternoon of programming including remarks by Ireland Attorney General Rossa Fanning.
This will be the second in this year’s Global Seminar Series (GSS), following the first event in Brazil in February. The GSS features three segments of general interest to all competition practitioners exploring leading edge issues, with opportunities for sharing thoughts and questions as well as networking.
Fanning, a senior counsel in Ireland’s legal system, will open the program. He was appointed to his position in December 2022, and in that role is the legal advisor to the government and chief legal office in Ireland.
Other programs include:
• “Reflections on the Interplay Between the Biden-era Political Landscape and Antitrust Enforcement in the U.S” — Makan Delrahim of Latham & Watkins LLP, Washington, D.C. will present her perspective and lead the discussion.
• “M&A Antitrust: Getting Deals Done in a World of Increased Enforcer Intervention” — This panel will discuss the latest developments and enforcement trends across the globe including expansion of enforcement powers, increased focus on “killer acquisitions” and merger remedies — all from the enforcer’s viewpoint.
Participants are moderator Brian G. Kennelly, Blackstone Chambers Limited, London; and speakers Marion Bailly, deputy head of Unit, Merger Case Support and Policy, DG Comp, European Commission, Paris; Brian McHugh, member, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Dublin; Marceline Tournier, Global Head of Antitrust, Nestlé, Lausanne, Switzerland.
• “Antitrust Enforcement (Conduct): What Does the Future Hold (in) U.S., E.U, Ireland?”— This panel examines developments and enforcement trends across the globe, including enhanced focus on labor markets, interlocking directorates and information exchanges; cartel leniency programs and what enforcers are doing to incentivize self-disclosure and cooperation; and inspections and evidence gathering in a hybrid environment. Participants are moderator Calum Warren, Matheson LLP, Dublin; and speakers Elizabeth R. Prewitt, Latham & Watkins, LLP, New York; Angeline Woods, legal director, Antitrust & EU Affair, United Technologies, Amsterdam; and Eksteen Maritz, director Cartels Division, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Dublin.
• “A Judicial Perspective on International Antitrust Enforcement for the Modern Age” — Suzanne Kingston, judge of the General Court of the European Union, Luxembourg will provide reflections.
• “Antitrust, Digital, Regulation, Consumer Protection: A Brave New World?”— The discussion will look ahead on a host of competition matters. Participants are moderator Andrea Coscelli, Keystone Strategy, London; and speakers Úna Butler, member, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Dublin; and Filomena Chirico, head of Unit, DG Connect, DMA Task Force, European Commission, Brussels.
