Calhoun County SAKI secures conviction, sentencing on two sexual assault cold cases

Logan David Fields, 33, of Hartford, was sentenced this month on one count each of 1st degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and 4th degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC), stemming from separate assaults dating from 2009 to 2012, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Fields pled guilty to both counts in December 2022, and Judge Sarah Lincoln of the 37th Judicial Circuit Court has sentenced him to serve 15-30 years in prison for the 1st degree CSC and 8-24 months for the 4th degree offense.

From 2009 Fields began abusing a 16-year-old until 2012, resulting in the plea to CSC1. The Calhoun County Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) team learned of this victim during the investigation of a separate 2012 sexual assault perpetrated by Fields, for which he pled to the 4th degree CSC charge. Fields was linked to the 2012 assault by DNA evidence. This sentencing follows a six-year investigation by the Calhoun County Sexual Assault Team.  

“Our SAKI units throughout the state are uniquely qualified to close these long-cold sexual assault cases and stop multiple-offenders from making victims of more Michigan residents,” said Nessel. “I’m thankful for the team in Calhoun County who worked toward these convictions and, as always, we hope this allows some closure for the survivors.”

“The Sexual Assault Kit Initiative has been instrumental in bringing sex offenders to justice,” said Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert. “Advances in DNA technology and tenacious criminal investigations are pulling criminals out of the shadows.”

The state’s SAKI was established in 2016 to investigate and prosecute sexual assaults related to previously untested sexual assault evidence kits. The SAKI project provides sexual assault victims with the opportunity to have their case re-investigated in a comprehensive, trauma-informed manner. With the assistance of Bronson Sexual Assault Services, the Calhoun County team was in continuous contact with the sexual assault survivors during this investigation and court process and provided counseling services at no charge.
