To boost public engagement and increase transparency of the judicial system, the Michigan Supreme Court last Friday announced a new, public component to the appointment process. The court makes appointments or nominates people to the governor for appointment for 15 different groups, and the opportunities to join those groups will be posted on a new appointments webpage (www.courts.michigan.gov/courts/supreme-court/appointment-opportunities) as they become available.
To implement the new process, the court also announced immediate openings for a layperson on the Attorney Discipline Board, a layperson and two attorneys on the Attorney Grievance Commission, and an attorney on the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners. The application deadline for all is August 1.
"Court appointees to both regulatory and advisory bodies play a key role in protecting the public and making sure our judicial system meets the highest standards," said Chief Justice Elizabeth T. Clement. "We are opening the door and shedding light on a critical step in the process."
