Richmond police chief sentenced to jail for LEIN violation

On Thursday, Richmond Police Chief Thomas Costello was sentenced in New Baltimore District Court.

It is alleged that on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Costello intentionally used LEIN (Michigan's computer network for law enforcement officers) to retrieve non-public information without probable cause.

Costello was charged with LEIN Information - Unauthorized Disclosure, a 93-day misdemeanor. On Thursday, Costello was sentenced to five days in jail by New Baltimore District Court Judge William Hackel III.

“The misuse of a law enforcement information system is a betrayal of the public trust and undermines the very principles of justice. Our duty is not only to uphold the law but to ensure that those entrusted with its enforcement do so with the utmost integrity,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
