Prosecutor pursues money for kids owed in child support, collects $323K

On Wednesday, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido’s Office reported to the Macomb County Commission the successful collection of more than $323,916.40 this year pursuant to a new Felony Non-Support Program targeting people who owe $5K more in child support to Macomb County children.

The Macomb County Commission and county executive last year approved 33% matching funds for a Prosecutor’s Office grant to add three staff to help prosecutors pursue certain felony child support cases:  one investigator and two senior office assistants.  The grant pays two-thirds of the cost.  The program targets child support arrearages of $5,000 and up, sought by the custodial parent.

As of September 1, 2023, the program through payment plans and prosecutions has collected $323,916.40 for Macomb County children and their parents. The program is working with 176 new cases on payment plans to help people get back on track with paying their child support obligations and has collected $269,326.81 with those efforts. The office is also prosecuting parents who have failed to meet their child support obligation and/or have declined to participate in the program. $54,589.59 has been collected on those cases.

“My duty is not only to seek justice but also to ensure the well-being of our community's most vulnerable members, our children. The Felony Non-Support Program, bolstered by the 2023 budget allocation, has allowed us to make significant strides in holding those responsible for child support arrearages of $5,000 or more accountable. Through my dedicated team, we are committed to pursuing the rightful support owed to custodial parents,” said  Lucido.
