The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM) Violence Against Women Project (VAWP) presents the webinar “Michigan Domestic Violence Offenses & The 2024 MCL 750.224f Firearms Restriction Amendments” on Friday, February 9, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom.
In November 2023, the governor signed amendments to MCL 750.224f, which expanded prohibitions on the firearms and ammunition possessions after conviction to include designated domestic misdemeanor offenses. Additional amendments made to the statute expand firearms prohibitions to any felony punishable by over one year, including 2-year high misdemeanors.
These amendments will take effect on February 13.
PAAM’s Violence Against Women Project Director Tanya Abdelnour and PAAM Training Attorney James Benison will lead a presentation and discussion on the amendments related to designated domestic misdemeanor firearms restrictions as well as to the implications of the change in the definition of felony under this statute.
The online discussion will include an overview of the statutory changes, charging the newly designated domestic offenses, plea negotiations, and trial proofs related to the DV designated offenses, as well as collateral consequences of the changes to all offenses that now fall within the prohibitions of the prohibited persons statute (formerly felon in possession). There will be time for questions at the end of the webinar.
This online presentation qualifies for 1.5 hours of continuing legal education pursuant to PAAM’s Best Practices recommendations.
Webinar registration is limited to prosecutors, law enforcement, and system-based victims’ (prosecutor office) advocates. To register, visit www.michiganprosecutor.org and click on “training.” For additional questions, contact training coordinator Katlyn Bolan at bolank4@michigan.gov.
