The assistance comes after President Joe Biden last week approved Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s request for a major disaster declaration in Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, and Wayne counties. The declaration now opens the application process for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) individual assistance for affected residents.
“We are profoundly grateful to Gov. Whitmer and President Biden for their actions that allow South Lyon residents to access vital aid,” Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter said. “Their support will allow residents to recover from those devastating storms.”
Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the City of South Lyon and other designated areas can apply for assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or by using the FEMA App. Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service, or others, can give FEMA the number for that service.
A local Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will also be set up for those who need help applying in person or to answer any questions. When that location is determined, it will be posted at www.oakgov.com/community/emergency-management/current-emergencies.
This FEMA assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.
Residents in Oakland County, specifically South Lyon, were impacted by the Aug. 23-24 storms that caused extensive damage to homes and businesses.
