Six road project estimates approved by Climax Township Board

Six proposed road maintenance project estimates were approved by the Climax Township Board at its regular meeting February 13, including one gravel road project that should allow the owners of a Climax Township farm to move forward with a generous offer to pay to have a dirt road paved with all-weather asphalt.

A gravel road resurfacing project on 40th Street from R to Q Avenue, estimated to cost approximately $25,000, is one of the six road maintenance projects proposed by the Climax Township Road Committee the township hopes will be placed on the 2024 road maintenance schedule by the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County.

Road Commission of Kalamazoo County Managing Director Joanna Johnson said the contract and estimate for the 40th Street project will be on the Tuesday, February 27 RCKC Board agenda.

Richard Myers, of Myers Farms, LLC, said Myers Farms has offered to pay approximately $375,000 that is estimated to have the one-mile stretch of gravel road on 40th Street from R to Q Avenue paved with all-weather asphalt. However the project cost from RCKC could come in higher. If that is the case, Myers Farms, LLC would have to make the decision whether to pay the additional cost.

A portion of the gravel road resurfacing project on 40th Street will bring the one-mile stretch up to Road Commission of Kalamazoo County standards for paving.

If the contract is approved by RCKC, Climax Township Supervisor Trent Piper said Myers Farms, LLC will reimburse Climax Township for the all-weather asphalt costs.

Other road maintenance estimates that were approved by the Township Board include:

• 38th Street - R Avenue to PQ Avenue, crack fill, chip seal, with a project estimate of $73,647.

• 42nd Avenue - P Avenue to O Avenue, crack fill, chip seal with a project estimate of $49,621.

• OP Avenue - 44th Street to 47th Street, crack fill, chip seal with a project estimate of $61,871.

• 37th Street - T Avenue to S Avenue, gravel resurfacing with a project estimate of $146,119.

• 41st Street - RS Avenue to R Avenue, gravel resurfacing with a project estimate of $147,668.

Myers, who said Myers Farms, LLC, owns a dairy farm and another farm along the one-mile stretch he would like to pave, said the main motivator for the local farm to make the very generous offer to pay for paving the road, is the gravel road is hard on farm equipment and vehicles, especially when there is mud, dust and pot holes.

“The maintenance, the county does their best, we do our best, but it’s never great. And so it’s just hard on our equipment and ... hard on our vehicles. It is just one of those things that we’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” said Myers, who said between feed truck deliveries to the dairy farm and other daily routine trips down the road, the number of times farm employees and Myers Farms, LLC vehicles travel the one-mile stretch of road could reach hundreds a day during the busy time of the year.
