Sterling Heights man guilty of first degree murder of his girlfriend

On Wednesday, Jason Ross was found guilty of killing his girlfriend by a Macomb County jury after a ten day jury trial by Assistant Prosecutors Elizabeth Abbo and Kelsey Heath.

On Saturday, July 24, 2021, Jason Ross brutally murdered his girlfriend, Kathleen Hales, age 47, by stabbing her multiple times and hitting her with a hammer in their home in Sterling Heights.  Ross hid the body and fled with the victim’s credit cards, prescription drugs, and her car.  He was apprehended in Prescott, MI with one of the murder weapons and the victim’s belongings.

Ross, age 50, was found guilty of First Degree Murder, a life without parole felony, Larceny from a Building, a four year felony, Unlawful Driving Away a Motor Vehicle, a five year felony, and Stealing a Financial Transaction Device without Consent, a four year felony.  Ross is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, October 10, at 9 a.m. by Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Matthew Sabaugh.

"The medical examiner described the suffering endured by the victim as nothing short of torture. No one should have to endure that, especially at the hands of someone they trusted. We are grateful to the jury for delivering justice, and our thoughts remain with the victim’s family as they continue to deal with this tragic loss," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
