As of last week, The Zeeland Record became part of The Detroit Legal News Publishing Co., a company founded 130 years ago in Michigan’s largest city.
The Record, fittingly, also sports a long and distinguished publishing history, tracing its roots to the late 1890s when the Van Koevering family founded the weekly newspaper serving Zeeland and the surrounding Ottawa County community in West Michigan.
In recent years, The Record has been guided by longtime editor Kurtis Van Koevering, the fourth-generation member of his family to lead the paper. Upon the sale of the newspaper company, Van Koevering recently retired, turning over the editor duties to veteran West Michigan journalist Greg Chandler, formerly of the View Newspaper Group West in Hastings. Chandler, a Central Michigan University alum, also holds master degrees from Miami (Ohio) University and Grand Valley State University.
The Detroit Legal News Publishing owns and operates 11 newspapers across Michigan, including its flagship daily in Detroit. Other newspapers in The Legal News group include The Oakland County Legal News, The Macomb County Legal News, The Washtenaw County Legal News, The Flint-Genesee County Legal News, The Jackson County Legal News, The Ingham County Legal News, The Grand Rapids Legal News, The Norton Lakeshore Examiner Muskegon County Legal News, The Climax Crescent, and The Zeeland Record.
“Detroit Legal News Publishing is proud to add this newspaper to its family of publications in Michigan and continue its legacy of service to the Zeeland and Ottawa County community,” said Ban Ibrahim, publisher of the newspaper group.
The Detroit-based publishing company, which also includes its Inland Press subsidiary, is headed by President Bradley L. Thompson II, the fifth-generation of his family to be involved in a leadership role. Thompson, a past-president of the Michigan Press Association, is the current president of Michigan Press Association Foundation, which supports quality community journalism in the state.
