Webinar looks at ‘Dealing with the Sovereign Citizen’ for prosecutors

The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan will present the Traffic Safety Training Program webinar “Dealing with the Sovereign Citizen, from Traffic Stop to the Courtroom” on Thursday, February 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Within the United States, clandestine groups with a distinct set of beliefs and principles operate to subvert U.S. laws and effect change through violence. ?Almost daily, law enforcement and prosecutors must confront these citizens who refuse to recognize the authority of the very laws they are tasked with enforcing.  While these individuals, these sovereign citizens, continue to frustrate law enforcement, those who interact with them must also appreciate and understand what a danger these individuals can pose to those who come into contact with them on a daily basis.

This webinar will cover various topics concerning these counterculture movements including:

• The history and belief structure behind the sovereign citizen movement in the U.S. including the foundational beliefs of the various groups who operate withing the sphere of domestic terrorism within the U.S.

• The different laws that sovereign citizens, and similarly situated groups, challenge most commonly.

• The dangers that these movements, including domestic terrorism movements, pose to law enforcement and prosecutors who must interact with them.

• How police officers and prosecutors can combat some of these tactics as they deal with them from the traffic stop to the courtroom.

This online seminar is recommended for law enforcement, prosecutors, and assistant prosecutors who deal with or come in contact with individuals active in theses counterculture movements.

Speaking at the webinar will be Special Agent Hank Impola, Detroit FBI; and Eric Wanink, traffic safety resource prosecutor for the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan.
