The State Appellate Defender Office and the Criminal Defense Resource Center will present a webinar on “District-to-Circuit Court Appeals 101” Tuesday, February 18, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
In this training, attendees will learn the basics about handling an appeal from the district to the circuit court. From filing requirements to necessary documents to deadlines, attendees will learn what they need to know to file (or defend) their first appeal. Attendees will also learn tips and tricks for arguing successfully on appeal, drawing from speaker Jonathan Forman’s practice experience and as a clerk for the Michigan Supreme Court.
Forman is an assistant public defender at the Ingham County Public Defender’s Office, and a former clerk at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the Michigan Supreme Court. At the Public Defender’s Office, he handles both trial and appellate cases. In 2021, Forman briefed and argued People v Jack, which held that defense attorneys are entitled to unredacted police reports and witness contact information as a part of discovery in criminal prosecutions.
