Criminal Law Section conducts Midwinter Conference

The Criminal Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan will present its Midwinter Conference online Friday, February 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. via Zoom.

Ingham County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Bill Crino will open the program with a discussion of effective opening arguments. Tom Grden, clinical case manager for the Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program, will talk about how to manage life's trials. MAACS Youth Appellate Defense Counsel Joshua Pease will explain the differences between the youth and adult justice systems.

Following a short break, the program will resume with a panel discussion on specialty courts with Judges Jason Bomia, Janice Cunningham, and John Hallacy. Angie Martell, attorney and mediator, will share ideas about how to protect vulnerable clients. Wayne County Special Assistant Prosecutor Timothy Baughman will close the program with his popular year-end review of high impact criminal cases.

The program will only be offered live via Zoom Webinar (it will not be available for later viewing). The detailed agenda is attached. Participants can receive up to 6 continuing legal education credits towards MIDC Standard 1.

Criminal Law Section members who register and attend all sessions are eligible to win a book bundle valued at over $700: “Michigan Rules of Evidence and Trial Objections,” “Introducing Evidence at Trial,” “Michigan Criminal Procedure,” “Michigan Drunk Driving Law and Practice,” and “Michigan Appellate Handbook.”
