On Saturday, June 7, Michigan’s oldest and largest free legal aid clinic invites all of Metro Detroit to the annual pro bono outdoor event and family fun fair.
“Law Day increases access to justice and allows lawyers to give back,” says attorney Scott Goodwin. “Americans get a free public defender in criminal matters, but not in civil trials or legal issues like housing, employment, or family law—which may go unaddressed due to lack of resources. Providing free legal aid contributes to a more just and equitable system.” Since 1987, Goodwin’s yearly event has featured top lawyers volunteering their time. Goodwin says, “This is free access to 25 experienced lawyers who can help resolve issues and protect your rights.”
The event provides a family-friendly combo: free legal advice for adults and free carnival fun for the kids (bounce houses, games, face-painting). As always, Law Day means free hot dogs and ice cream, plus prizes like BMX-style bikes given away hourly, along with Detroit Tiger and Detroit Lions tickets. And of course, volunteers hand out hundreds of free bicycle safety helmets. A fun bonus includes in-person tributes to Spider Man and Wonder Woman (great photo opportunities).
WMUZ-FM radio is sponsoring Scott Goodwin Law Day. Making personal appearances will be WMUZ hosts Chris Stevenson, Bob Dutko, and Paul Edwards, plus talent from WCHB-AM. These popular on-air personalities will be giving away prizes, books, music, tee-shirts, and more.
Law Day will take place Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Goodwin Law Center, 999 Haynes in Birmingham, just south of Maple Road (15 Mile) and east of Woodward Avenue. For additional information, call 1-888-GOODWIN or visit www.1888goodwin.com.
