“This is what progress looks like, public and private partners coming together to create affordable housing that offers stability for our residents,” said Coulter. “Thanks to the Oakland Together Housing Trust Fund and the vision of developers who build affordable communities, we’re turning our strategic goal of livable neighborhoods into reality.”
Westwood South Apartments, located on the redeveloped site of the former Midwestern Baptist College, offers one- and two-bedroom units featuring energy-efficient appliances, in-unit washers and dryers, private balconies or patios and ADA-compliant accessibility.
“Our goal was to create a place where individuals and families, no matter their circumstances, could feel at home and supported,” said Bill Chalmers, managing partner of Westwood Apartment Communities. “The partnership with Oakland County and the Housing Trust Fund was instrumental in bridging the funding gap and helping us bring this vision to life. The stories coming out of
Westwood South - like the mother and child who found a safe home just in time after leaving a domestic violence shelter - make this project deeply meaningful.”
Among the new residents is Frank Bell, a Navy veteran, amputee and lifelong Pontiac resident, who now calls Westwood South home through the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program.
“I’ve lived in Pontiac all my life and I’m grateful to be able to remain a Pontiac resident because of the Westwood community and support from Oakland County and VASH,” Bell said. “It gives me peace of mind to stay in the city I love so much.”
Westwood South is just one of many developments helping Oakland County advance its strategic goal of livable neighborhoods. The HTF is accepting applications for projects that align with its mission and values, including supporting underserved communities and creating economic opportunity through housing.
Created by the Board of Commissioners in 2022 and launched in 2023, the Housing Trust Fund leverages federal, county and private sector dollars to support the development and preservation of affordable, attainable and workforce housing. To date, the HTF has committed more than $18 million to housing projects across the county.
