COUNSELOR’S CORNER: Love is all around us

As I journey through each day I realize more that love is all around us. People open doors for each other. People smile at one another. Young couples and old couples will walk holding hands. In each moment as I encounter other people, there seems to be a presence of love.

In the depths of each person is a desire to be loved.  It is important to become more conscious of the presence of love and the desire to be loved. Love is so disarming. Love is so uplifting.

We had a gathering last Saturday at my daughter’s home having a graduation party for my granddaughter who just finished high school and is  going on to college. There were many people there. Many were old friends  of mine over many years. Many were young friends of my granddaughter. Love was certainly in the air. Warmth and smiles surrounded everyone. My son and his loving wife drove up from Missouri with their two little  boys. My other daughter was there with her wonderful daughters.  It was such a joyful and peaceful gathering. Best friends of my family over many years were present.  It was a day of celebrating love and friendship. I felt so honored as my granddaughter introduced me to some of her close high school friends. The evening was filled with love and goodness.

Everyone desires to be loved. And when a person is kind and loving to someone else, the depths of love begin to happen. In my apartment building whenever I pass someone in the hallway there is a smile and a hello.  And Saturday at this party, my daughter’s home was filled with smiles, hugs and hellos.

When  there are gatherings like this, a Loving Presence surrounds everyone. The next day, my son and I drove out to the cemetery to sit by the grave of my wife. We both felt her loving presence and felt so grateful for her presence in our lives.

When I begin to focus on love, I begin to see it everywhere. When I am loving toward others, I can experience love everywhere and feel this loving presence surrounding me.

When people make a decision to smile, be loving and kind, a desire for God surfaces. A sense of Faith in a Loving God surfaces. Negativity begins to disappear and the awareness of the uselessness of being negative makes more sense.

Sometimes a simple gathering of smiling and caring people can be so inspiring and uplifting. This gentle and kind graduation party inspired and uplifted me in a very profound and meaningful way. That song, first sung by Jackie DeShannon in 1965, “What the world needs most is love sweet love,” is so true and so accurate. And every time I experience kindness and love, I want to bring more kindness and love into the world.
