Effects of THC on brain function discussed online

The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan will present the Traffic Safety Training Program Webinar “The Effects of Tetrahydrocannabinol on Brain Function and Resulting Observed Behaviors” on Thursday, July 24, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.

This presentation explores the neurological effects of THC, emphasizing its impact on key brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, amygdala, and basal ganglia. Short-term effects include impaired memory, slowed reaction time, altered perception, and decreased coordination, while long-term use may contribute to cognitive deficits and psychiatric risks. These effects translate into impairment of a person’s ability to safely drive.

THC significantly reduces a driver’s ability to respond to road hazards, maintain lane control, and make quick decisions, leading to an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents. THC’s effects are complex, and THC impairment detection continues to present challenges to law enforcement officers across the country.

This presentation, however,  will cover how its effects on the brain create observable indicators of impairment that include erratic speed control, delayed reaction times, and impaired multitasking abilities. Law enforcement officers’ use of standardized field sobriety tests and the additional tests taught in the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) course continues to be valid and evidence-based for impairment detection.

Speaking at the webinar will be Shannon Bryant, Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor for the State of Nevada.
