The Michigan Judicial Institute and Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Services will present a webinar on “What Juvenile Division Jurists and Justice Professionals Need to Know About Cybercrime, Part 1: Introduction to Cybercrime and Online Juvenile Delinquency Matters” Friday, August 22, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom.
This two-part webinar series will explore the issue of cybercrime in juvenile justice as presenters discuss criminal activity using computers and digital systems, how to identify cybercrime, and managing digital evidence.
In Part 1, speaker Dr. Thomas J. Holt will discuss:
• An overview of the problem of cybercrime in relation to juvenile delinquency matters, discussing its different forms, and the challenges it presents within the justice system.
• Common applications used by youth and current insights into delinquent behavior on these platforms.
• Broader considerations related to phones, tablets, apps, and Internet use.
• A discussion of the open, deep, and dark web, including how each function.
Holt is a professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University, and the Director of the Center for Cybercrime Investigation and Training. His research focuses on cybercrime, cyberterrorism, and policy responses to these problems. Holt’s work has been published in a range of academic journals, such as Criminology & Public Policy and Journal of Criminal Justice. He is the co-author of multiple books on cybercrime and has presented at academic and practitioner conferences around the world.
Holt will also provide information relevant to legal processes and the collection of digital evidence, which will be explored further in Part 2 of this webinar series.
The intended audience for the webinar includes judges, referees, court administrators, juvenile probation officers and case workers, law enforcement, attorneys, and other juvenile justice stakeholders.
