Historical society looking to preserve judge’s legacy

The Royal Oak Historical Society, in cooperation with the Berkley Historical Committee and with the support of the Wittenberg Family and 44th District Court Judges Derek Meinecke and Andrew Kowalkowski, wish to preserve the legacy of the late Judge Jamie L. Wittenberg with a permanent courthouse memorial at the 44th District Court.

Wittenberg was first elected to the bench in 2008 and became judge of the 45-A District Court for the City of Berkley. In 2014 he was re-elected and became a judge of the newly consolidated 44th District Court in 2015, serving both Berkley and Royal Oak.

Diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2019, Judge Wittenberg faced his illness with courage and resilience, continuing to serve with a full docket, inspiring all who knew him.  Hi legacy of enlightened justice and dedicated service continues to be the bedrock of the 44th District Court. He passed away on November 20, 2022, shortly after being sworn in for his third term
