Annual Red Mass
The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law conducted its 113th annual Red Mass on Tuesday, September 23, at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church in Detroit. U.S. District Court Shalina Kumar (far right), Eastern District of Michigan led the Renewal of the Lawyer’s Oath of Commitment. Also taking part in the mass were (left to right) Detroit Mercy Law Student Bar Association Executive President Elise Mashni, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Catherine Heise, Michigan Court of Appeals Judges Michael Riordan, Anica Letica, and Adrienne Young; retired Justice Maura Corrigan; Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Christopher Murray; and Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Muriel Hughes. Red Mass is an occasion for judges, attorneys, civic leaders, and law students of all faiths to come together and pray for blessings and strength in the coming year’s work. Detroit Mercy Law’s annual Red Mass dates back to 1877 when Detroit College, as the university was then known, began its first year with a mass at Saints Peter and Paul Church. The School of Law continued the tradition when it opened in 1912, again hosting the Red Mass on behalf of the Archdiocese of Detroit at Saints Peter and Paul through the present.
