1,000th firearm disposed by Disarmory Ministries

Disarmory Ministries, along with its predecessor St. David’s Firearm Disposal Ministries, has now disposed of more than 1,000 unwanted firearms from Metro Detroiters in the last 4 years.

“This really shows you the extent to which our communities have unwanted firearms,” said Disarmory board president and founder Rev. Chris Yaw, “We are happy to be able to provide this important, ongoing service to our community.”

Disarmory organizes regular gun buybacks at area churches, like St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor on October 11 and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Plymouth on October 4 as well as an ongoing buyback at 2312 Greenfield Road in Berkley where the 1,006th firearm was recently donated.

As a thank you for their weapons, donors can receive artwork, t-shirts, and gift cards from Meijer: $50 for a long gun, $100 for a handgun, $200 for an assault rifle. $300 max per donor. Data gathered aids University of Michigan firearm safety researchers. Trained firearms experts use chop saws to cut up donated weapons according to ATF standards. Scrap metal is made into artwork on premise. This work has been profiled in the New York Times and on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

“This is a needed service for many people in our state,” said Ryan Bates, executive director of End Gun Violence Michigan “An estimated one quarter of the firearms in the U.S., 100 million firearms, are owned by people who did not purchase them. Inherited and gifted firearms may be unwanted and less cared for, posing a potential public safety hazard.”

There may be millions of unwanted firearms posing unknown hazards to communities. Taking unwanted firearms out of circulation protects citizens from harm. Specifically: 1) children for whom firearms are the number one cause of death; 2) people in mental distress as studies indicate increased firearm access greatly increases suicide risk; and 3) the community at large as a high percentage of firearm crime is committed with stolen firearms.

Disarmory Ministries is proud to partner with federal, state, county and local law enforcement. With its predecessor, St. David’s Episcopal Church, Disarmory has been holding buyback events since 2022, disposing of more than 1,000 firearms.
