‘Competency Alternatives’ focus of NCSC webinar

The National Center for State Courts will present a webinar on “Competency & Restoration Reimagined from Practice to Possibility: Competency Alternatives” Wednesday, November 5, from 3 to 4 p.m.

As the final installment of the three-part “Competency and Restoration Reimagined from Practice to Possibility” webinar series, “Competency Alternatives,” examines alternatives that connect individuals to treatment. Many alternatives often have better results than competency, both in terms of public safety and behavioral health outcomes. Attendees will learn about alternatives to traditional competency processes and their pros and cons.

Speaking at the webinar will be:

• Susan McMahon, professor of lawyering skills, University of California, Irvine

• Chief Judge Susan Blanco, 8th Judicial District, Colorado Courts

• Judge John T. Gibbons, 17th Judicial Circuit Court, Illinois Courts

• Retired Judge Steve Leifman, The Leifman Group

• Brian Shannon, professor, Texas Tech University School of Law

• Moderator Michelle R. O’Brien, principal court management consultant, NCSC
