Law school celebrates success of fall In-House Moot Court Competition

Wayne State University Law School successfully concluded its Fall 2025 Peter J. Henning In-House Moot Court Competition on October 18 and 19 at the Law School. The annual event honors the legacy of the late Professor Peter J. Henning, whose passion for advocacy and mentorship continues to inspire Wayne Law’s Moot Court community.

This year’s problem focused on the government’s use of technologically advanced pole cameras to surveil an individual suspected of producing and distributing methamphetamine. The competition featured 32 junior members, all second-year law students, who competed under the guidance of 16 senior coaches.

The competition was organized by Co-directors of In-House Competitions Dilraj Preet Gill and Jack Glanville, alongside Chancellor Angelo Alexandar, Vice Chancellor Alexandra Sax, Director of Outside Competitions Gillian Rabine, Director of Mentorship Layal Eid, and Problem Coordinator Cole Luken, with support from faculty advisors professors Lauren Simasko and Kathryn Day.

“The Fall 2025 Peter J. Henning In-House Moot Court Competition was a tremendous success,” Gill said. “This weekend truly embodied Professor Henning’s legacy. I am so proud of all our students; witnessing their growth from tryouts to competition day is remarkable. I am also deeply grateful for our board, faculty supervisors, alumni, and administration, whose support made it possible to implement the many changes introduced this semester. A big thank you as well to our volunteer judges, practicing attorneys, and former Moot Court members whose continued commitment keeps this tradition strong year after year.”

The final round was presided over by U.S. District Court Judge Susan K. DeClercq, Eastern District of Michigan, with additional rounds judged by Wayne Law alumni and other practicing attorneys from the Detroit legal community.

Competition results include:

• Champion: Sophie Hart
• Runner-up: Bennett McGraw
• Semifinalists: Allison Sullivan and Maria Gustitus
• Quarterfinalists: Cambell Geibel, Jared LaRue, Lily Edwards, and Regina Cabrera Hernandez
• Best Oralist: Cambell Geibel
• Above-and-Beyond Award: Kerri Tang
• Best Senior Coach Award: Dino Bucci

The fall competition marks a milestone for the 32 members of Wayne Law’s Moot Court program, who will return in winter 2026 to compete in the next in-house competition or represent the school in national tournaments.
