Firm to give away hundreds of carbon monoxide detectors to local families

Goodman Acker is taking action to reduce carbon monoxide poisoning incidents across Michigan. In partnership with the Southfield Fire Department, the firm will donate and distribute 500 Kidde™ AC Plug-in AA Battery Backup Electrochemical Carbon Monoxide Detectors to local families. The giveaway is taking place today at the Southfield Fire Station, located at 24477 Lahser Rd.

Carbon monoxide detectors will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Southfield Firefighters will also be available to answer questions about detector usage and installation.

Carbon monoxide poisoning remains a serious health concern in Michigan, particularly during the winter months when furnaces, water heaters, and generators are in heavy use. According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, there were 481 confirmed cases of unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning among Michigan residents in 2023, resulting in more than 30 deaths. Most of these incidents are preventable with early detection and awareness.

This initiative is part of Goodman Acker’s Protect & Prevent Project, a community safety program aimed at  reducing preventable injuries and harm to Michiganders.

“We have supported and represented victims of carbon monoxide poisoning and have seen first hand the devastating impacts to individuals and their homes should this silent danger go undetected,” said Barry Goodman, founding partner of Goodman Acker. “We are dedicated to helping protect our community and we’re taking proactive steps to provide life-saving tools to our neighbors and prevent tragedy before it strikes,” he added.

Today’s Prevent & Protect event is in alignment with Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month in November and reinforces Goodman Acker’s long-standing commitment to community safety and advocacy.
