Solo and small firm practitioners represent a significant portion of the OCBA’s membership, accounting for 47% of its members. Despite their large presence within the legal community, these attorneys often face unique professional challenges, including managing complex ethical responsibilities, navigating evolving technology, overseeing business operations, and practicing in somewhat isolated environments.
The formation of the Solo/Small Firm Committee reflects OCBA’s commitment to supporting this vital segment of the legal community by offering targeted resources, professional development, networking opportunities, and peer collaboration.
“In creating this committee, OCBA is responding directly to the needs of nearly half of our membership,” said Executive Director Jennifer Quick. “Solo and small firm attorneys play a critical role in delivering legal services throughout Oakland County, and this committee will provide meaningful support to help them thrive.”
OCBA began gauging interest in the formation of this committee back in May 2025 and hosted an exploratory meeting on January 8, 2026. Interest in the committee has been strong with the committee roster already at 30 members.
During the exploratory meeting, participants shared insights into common challenges and opportunities, including practice management, networking, and staying current with legal developments. Attendees also helped establish the committee’s leadership, meeting structure, and mission.
Mission and Purpose
The Solo/Small Firm Committee is dedicated to supporting and advancing solo practitioners and small firm attorneys by fostering peer-to-peer exchange of law firm management best practices, encouraging attorney-to-attorney referrals and business development opportunities, and providing practical, high-quality educational programming.
