“I’m committed to protecting access to health care and growing small business,” said Whitmer. “Communities across our state, especially in rural areas, are already facing a shortage of health care workers. Historic federal cuts to Medicaid are raising health care costs for everyone. That’s why I’m signing a bipartisan bill to ensure 5,000 doctors can continue practicing in Michigan and making a difference in their communities. I’m also signing legislation to help downtown areas thrive and designate the wood duck as our official state duck. Let’s keep working together to protect access to health care and make a difference for Michiganders.”
House Bill 5455, sponsored by state Representative Rylee Linting (R-Wyandotte), reconfirms Michigan’s role in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which allows qualified physicians to be eligible for expedited licensure in all participating states. Without taking this step, Michigan would lose up to 5,000 doctors who currently serve around 100,000 Michiganders in the state.
Senate Bill 581, sponsored by state Senator Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), allows Harsens Island in St. Clair County to utilize tax incremental financing, which is a tool for growing and revitalizing downtowns and main streets. The bill allows locals to use property tax growth to help bolster their communities.
House Bill 4044, sponsored by state Representative Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn), designates the wood duck as the official duck of the state of Michigan. Once nearly extinct in the early 1900’s, the wood duck is a conservation success story with Michigan now being home to an estimated 100,000 wood ducks.
